Who Qualifies for Coverage

The Washington State Joint Underwriting Association (JUA) offers liability insurance to a specific set of practitioners and facilities engaged in midwifery care. Eligible applicants include:

Licensed Midwives (LMs)

  • Must hold a current Washington State midwifery license
  • Must be actively practicing within the state
  • Coverage is available for solo midwives, midwives in group practices, and midwives working in home and/or birth center settings.

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs)

  • Must be licensed as an ARNP in Washington with certification as a CNM
  • Must be providing care in home and/or freestanding birth center settings
  • Hospital-based CNMs are not eligible for JUA coverage

Freestanding Birth Centers

  • Must be licensed as a birth center in Washington State
  • Must maintain appropriate staffing and credentials in accordance with WA DOH guidelines
  • JUA coverage is intended for facilities offering birth services outside of the hospital setting

Coverage is not available for doulas, students, or unlicensed individuals.

All applicants are subject to review and must meet the JUA’s eligibility criteria.
